What Else Should I Know About Vehicle Inspections in Maryland?

Make sure that your vehicle is officially registered in Maryland or another state before you take it for vehicle inspection. After your inspection you’ll receive a report that will show which parts and systems meet Maryland’s standards.

If your vehicle passes the safety inspection, we’ll give you two copies of the Maryland Inspection Certificate or send it electronically to the MVA. Take the green copy to an MVA branch and submit it with the other documents needed to register your vehicle. Save the other copy for your records. If a dealer owns your vehicle this copy will need to be affixed to your window.

If your vehicle fails even one safety standard, you will not receive an inspection certificate.  We will identify the issues on the inspection report, and you must return to the same location to have it re-inspected. We’ll provide you with a list of what needs to be fixed, and discuss any services we recommend, along with their costs, so you can determine how best to proceed.

How Long Does a Car Inspection Take?

An inspection should take about 90 minutes once work begins.

How Often Are State Vehicle Inspections Required?

In Maryland, you don’t need to have your vehicle inspected on a regular basis, but it is a state mandate to have it inspected at certain times. Here’s when you do need to get an inspection:

  • You’ve just moved to Maryland and want to register your vehicle. In this case, you have 60 days to register your vehicle and get it inspected.
  • You’ve become an owner of a used vehicle. You’ll need a Maryland Safety Inspection certificate dated no more than 90 days prior to the registration date.
